Visit the Winifred Museum
Step into the stories of Central Montana with a visit to the Winifred Museum, located right in town. Guests can explore local history, homestead artifacts, military displays, dinosaur discoveries, and one of the most unique collections in the region.Our staff will be happy to help guests confirm current hours and point them toward must-see exhibits while they are in town.

Birding & Wildlife Watching
Winifred and the surrounding Missouri River Breaks country offer incredible opportunities for birding and wildlife watching. From prairie songbirds and upland birds to raptors circling above the coulees, the landscape is alive with movement, sound, and wide-open Montana beauty. Guests may also spot deer, antelope, elk, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife depending on the season and route. Many visitors come to float sections of the Missouri River, camp along the route, or enjoy a slower-paced outdoor escape surrounded by history, wildlife, and dramatic scenery. Scenic Drives
Some of the best experiences around Winifred happen from the road. Scenic drives through the surrounding prairie, breaks, ranchlands, river country, and gravel backroads reveal sweeping views, changing light, wildlife, historic landscapes, and the kind of solitude Montana is famous for. Road conditions can change quickly with weather, and some routes are best suited for high-clearance vehicles, so guests should check before heading out. Our staff will be happy to recommend favorite drives based on the season, road conditions, and the kind of adventure guests are looking for.
Recreational Resources
Local hunters pursue elk, deer, antelope, upland birds, waterfowl, turkey, pheasant, sharp-tailed grouse, coyotes, and other seasonal game near Winifred.
Anglers in Montana enjoy fishing for trout, walleye, northern pike, bass, perch, paddlefish, catfish, and other seasonal freshwater species.
James Kipp Recreation Area is situated along the Upper Missouri River and is open from April 1 to December 1, annually. This is a popular site for launching watercraft, as well as camping, picnicking and fishing.
Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River
To this day the Upper Missouri remains relatively unchanged and its settings vary from riparian vegetation, to the unique and beautiful “White Cliffs,” to the sharply carved and rugged “Badlands,” to the rolling, pine and juniper covered slopes of the “Breaks.”
The Stafford Ferry is one of Montana’s most unique transportation experiences and one of only a handful of ferries that continue to carry vehicles across the Missouri River. Located approximately 16 miles north of Winifred.
Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge
Encompassing approximately 1.1 million acres, Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge is the second largest national wildlife refuge in the lower 48 states.
Judith Landing Campground is located on the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River at the PN Bridge, a major river crossing between Big Sandy on the north and Winifred on the south.

Always Check Fire Conditions Before Heading Out
Wildfires can affect Montana's landscape, air quality, wildlife, agriculture, tourism, and recreation.
Woodhawk Bottom (often referred to as Lower Woodhawk) is a remote, primitive BLM campground situated East of Winifred, but is only accessible via rough, unimproved gravel roads.
The Slippery Ann Wildlife Viewing Area, located in the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, is famous for its fall elk rut. Situated roughly 6 miles east of Highway 191 on the Auto Tour Route, it provides prime, vehicle-accessible viewing of large bull elk and bugling displays.

"Gravel Road Safety: Speed limits are 45 on gravel roads. Always go over hills on the right side as you don't know what you will meet at the top. Watch for cattle, wildlife, and farm equiptment at all times." -Local Drivers
"Four Wheel drive vehicals are always recommended but in inclimate weather even four-wheel drive can prove insufficiant. Always check weather and road reports. Dirt (sans gravel) roads are IMPASSABLE when wet. No exceptions. Remember there are no AAA services around here." -Ranchers who don't want to tow you with their tractor
"Private ranch land is off limits unless you have direct permission from the owner or the owner has posted participation in the block managment program. Learn more here and plan your block managment hunts in advance." -Ranchers who don't want random people shooting their cows.
"Remember you are a long way from emergency services. Travel with extra food, water, and clothing. Having a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and snake bite kit along can make the difference between emergency or tragity." -Local Volunteer First Responders
